West Dunbartonshire’s MP Martin Docherty-Hughes has welcomed Scottish Government backing for the development of a new Marine Technology Park in Old Kilpatrick.

A grant of £1.98million has been awarded to West Dunbartonshire Council by the Scottish Government through its Clyde Mission Fund which aims to support projects that deliver jobs and economic opportunities to Clydeside communities.

Local MP Docherty-Hughes met this week with the Malin Group which is leading the project to transform the 47-acre Carless former oil refinery site into a modern marine engineering hub and manufacturing facility on the quayside.

SNP MP Martin arranged a virtual meeting with John MacSween, the Managing Director of Malin Group, to seek an update on the project and discuss the importance of bringing new skilled jobs and apprenticeship training opportunities to West Dunbartonshire.

Working in partnership with West Dunbartonshire Council, the Clyde Mission funding will support the next phase of development for the Scottish Marine Technology Park on the banks of the River Clyde. Once completed, the quayside will be brought back into use as a large fabrication facility and a deep-water jetty with a 1,100 tonne ship hoist – the largest of its kind in Europe.

The construction phase of the site is set to create more than 600 short-term jobs. As the project progresses, it is expected to bring an economic boost to West Dunbartonshire’s economy of £125.4 million per year and support an additional 1,000 jobs in marine manufacturing, engineering and retail.

Martin Docherty-Hughes MP said:

“West Dunbartonshire has a proud maritime heritage and it’s welcome news that these ambitious plans to develop a new marine engineering facility in Old Kilpatrick can move forward thanks to support provided by the Scottish Government.

“I have been receiving regular updates on the progress of the project from the Malin Group since first viewing early plans for the site. I’m grateful to their Managing Director for meeting with me to discuss the latest phase of the development .

“As West Dunbartonshire’s MP, I am very clear on the need to bring more skilled job opportunities to our communities. I hope the regeneration of the former Carless oil refinery site after almost 30 years will help ensure long-term employment and economic benefits for the area.

“The Scottish Marine Technology Park in Old Kilpatrick is an exciting project and I look forward to seeing further progress in the near future. I will continue working with West Dunbartonshire Council, the Scottish Government and others to support the investment needed to develop the economic potential of our Clydeside communities.”
