International Asbestos Memorial in Clydebank

Martin Docherty MP has lodged an Early Day Motion in parliament marking 25 years of the Clydebank Asbestos Group.

The SNP MP has praised the volunteer group which was founded in 1992 to help provide support, advice and information for victims of asbestos and their families in Clydebank and across the West of Scotland.

Mr Docherty tabled his parliamentary motion in tribute to those who have lost their lives to asbestos-related diseases, gaining cross-party support from MPs in the House of Commons.

Commenting, Martin Docherty MP said:

“Over the past 25 years Clydebank Asbestos Group has worked tirelessly to provide care and support for the victims of asbestos and their families.

“Our communities in West Dunbartonshire have been deeply impacted by mesothelioma and asbestos-related illnesses, especially in Clydebank which has the highest percentage of asbestos-related disease per head of population.

“The legacy of asbestos has been devastating for thousands of families. Clydebank Asbestos Group has made a hugely important contribution to improving the lives of those affected by asbestos and campaigning to raise awareness of its dangers since it was founded in 1992.

“It is also thanks to the dedicated volunteers of Clydebank Asbestos Group that we have the International Asbestos Memorial here in Clydebank – a fitting tribute to those who have lost their lives and a reminder that the fight for truth and justice continues.”
