SNP MP Martin Docherty-Hughes has welcomed a new study which places West Dunbartonshire as the best area in Scotland for access to fast broadband speeds.
The research on national broadband speeds published by the ‘Centre for Towns’ project found that West Dunbartonshire ranked as the number one constituency in Scotland for average download speeds.
West Dunbartonshire is also one of the top performing areas in the UK, ranking 4th place with an average download speed of 72.90 Mbps – well ahead of the national UK average of 46.2 Mbps.
Local MP Martin Docherty-Hughes, who has been campaigning for better internet connectivity in West Dunbartonshire, has welcomed the study which analysed over 6000 towns and villages across Scotland, Wales and England.
According to the latest figures, 98.7% of West Dunbartonshire premises now have access to superfast broadband thanks to the SNP’s Digital Scotland Superfast Broadband programme.
The Scottish Government is investing £600 million to ensure that everyone in Scotland has access to superfast broadband by 2021.
Martin Docherty-Hughes MP said:
“Having access to fast broadband is more important than ever to residents and businesses, which is why I have been campaigning for improved internet connectivity in West Dunbartonshire.
“Thanks to investment by the SNP Scottish Government more and more people are gaining access to faster broadband speeds.
“This is a very welcome study showing West Dunbartonshire as one of the best performing areas for broadband not just in Scotland but across the UK.
“There is of course more work to be done and I’m pleased that the Scottish Government has committed to bringing superfast broadband to the hardest to reach premises through its ‘Reaching 100%’ programme .
“I will continue doing everything I can to ensure that all homes and businesses in West Dunbartonshire have access to fast and reliable broadband.”
