My SNP colleagues and I have long been consistent and clear in our support for a two-state solution in Israel and Palestine, which must include resolution to all matters involving settlements and land ownership.
I deplore the violence and the loss of life that has occurred in Umm al-Hiran. These actions are unfair and discriminatory but also fundamentally damaging to the best interests of Israel. By way of example, the Bedouin used to volunteer in considerable numbers to serve in the Israeli Defence Force but this is no longer the case due to a deterioration in community relations and disputes such as that over Umm al-Hiran. Fair and inclusive policies towards the Arab population of Israel are essential for the long-term stability and prosperity of Israel and the entire region.
The subject of Israel is one which arises frequently in the House of Commons and, at the next appropriate opportunity, we will press the UK Government for their views on this matter.
