Martin supporting WASPI campaigners in West Dunbartonshire

Martin Docherty-Hughes, MP for West Dunbartonshire, has said that the SNP will never stop fighting for women born in the 1950s who face losing thousands of pounds due to changes in their state pension age.

Over 6,300 women in West Dunbartonshire are believed to be adversely impacted by state pension inequality – resulting in their retirement plans being shattered due to receiving little or no notice of the changes from the Department for Work and Pensions (DWP).

Local MP Martin Docherty-Hughes has given his full support to local Women Against State Pension Inequality (WASPI) campaigners, praising their tireless efforts to secure fair transitional arrangements for the women affected by state pension inequalities.

SNP MPs are committed to the campaign for a fairer pension deal for the WASPI women and will this week hold an Opposition Day Debate at Westminster calling for action from the UK government.

The debate follows the publication of new figures revealing that the Department for Work and Pensions (DWP) has completed just six complaint investigations relating to the WASPI campaign, with a backlog of thousands of complaints going unanswered.

Martin Docherty-Hughes MP said:

“The UK government continues to ignore the plight of millions of women across the UK born in the 1950s whose retirement plans have been thrown into chaos due to changes in their state pension age.

“With thousands of complaints being sent to the DWP from women who are being robbed of their state pension, it is astonishing that the UK government has only given six of these complaints the courtesy of a response.

“Here in West Dunbartonshire I have been working to support local WASPI campaigners who have been tireless in their efforts right the wrongs of this burning injustice.

“With life expectancy rates in West Dunbartonshire and across parts of the Scotland falling below the national average, there’s a real danger that many Scots will be prevented from enjoying a well-deserved retirement due to the callous actions of this Tory UK government.

“It is deeply disappointing, but not surprising, that the UK Chancellor’s Autumn budget statement once again failed to take action to help women affected by changes to their pension age. For the UK government to plead poverty over pension inequality beggars belief when the Tories can find £1 billion to help Theresa May cling to power.

“The SNP will continue to fight for justice and fairness for WASPI women in Scotland and across the UK.”
