Martin Docherty-Hughes MP has congratulated West Dunbartonshire Council for Voluntary Services (WDCVS) for securing £123,060 of funding from the Big Lottery Fund Scotland.

WDCVS is one of 18 groups across Scotland to share in almost £2 million of lottery funding to help bring people together in our local communities.

The cash boost for WDCVS, which works to develop voluntary services in West Dunbartonshire, will be used to establish a bespoke befriending service for adults with complex needs.

The project will see sixty volunteers benefit from additional training and support to provide the enhanced befriending service across West Dunbartonshire.

Martin Docherty-Hughes MP said:

“Before being elected as an MP I worked for more than a decade in the community and volunteering sector, so I know first-hand the important work that WDCVS does to support local groups and charities.

“It’s great news for West Dunbartonshire that the team has been successful in securing this award from the Big Lottery Fund. People who give up their time to participate in befriending projects such as this play a vital role in tackling loneliness and isolation in our communities.

“Big Lottery Scotland offers a range of funding opportunities to put worthwhile community projects into action – I would encourage any interested groups to get in touch to find out what support is available.”

Maureen McGinn, Big Lottery Fund Scotland Chair, said:

“Thanks to National Lottery players, this £2 million investment will reach into communities across Scotland and transform the lives of local people.

“Each of these inspiring projects will assist people at the times when they need most support, providing them with the tools, confidence and skills to work towards a more positive future.”
