Local MP Martin Docherty-Hughes has welcomed the increased number of homes and businesses in West Dunbartonshire benefiting from access to superfast broadband.

The SNP MP, who has been campaigning for better internet connectivity in West Dunbartonshire, has highlighted figures published by the House of Commons Library showing that local broadband speeds are 60% higher than the UK average.

According to latest data available for West Dunbartonshire, 98.7% of local premises have access to superfast broadband following investment by the Scottish Government’s Digital Scotland Superfast Broadband programme.

Across Scotland 95% of homes and businesses are now able to connect to fibre broadband, with West Dunbartonshire being highlighted as one of the best performing areas in the country.

The Scottish Government is investing £600 million to ensure that everyone in Scotland has access to superfast broadband by 2021.

Martin Docherty-Hughes MP said:

“Having access to superfast broadband is important, which is why I have been campaigning for improved internet connectivity for local households and businesses in West Dunbartonshire.

“Thanks to investment by the SNP Scottish Government more and more people are gaining access to faster broadband speeds.

“I’m delighted that 98.7% of premises locally can now get fibre internet at speeds well above the UK average – making West Dunbartonshire one of the best performing areas in the country.

“There is of course more work to be done and I welcome the Scottish Government’s commitment to bringing superfast broadband to the hardest to reach premises through its ‘Reaching 100%’ programme.

“I will continue doing everything I can to ensure that all homes and businesses in West Dunbartonshire have access to fast and reliable broadband.”

Fergus Ewing, Cabinet Secretary for Connectivity, said:

“Fast and reliable internet is fundamental for the future economic and social success of communities right across Scotland.

“This is a landmark for the Digital Scotland Superfast Broadband programme, which has connected around 890,000 premises to fibre broadband, and is ensuring Scotland can offer world-class digital infrastructure.

“However, we want to go further, and we are now focusing on delivering our £600 million ‘Reaching 100%’ programme, which is the biggest public investment ever made in a single UK broadband project. This will make sure every single premise in Scotland can access a speeds of at least 30Mbps by the end of 2021.”
