Local MP Martin Docherty-Hughes has added his backing to a campaign to help reduce the number of young people dying from undiagnosed heart conditions.

Across the UK it’s estimated that 12 young people lose their lives each week due to undiagnosed cardiac conditions – a statistic the MP for West Dunbartonshire has described as “tragic and sobering”.

SNP MP Docherty-Hughes has joined all 59 of Scotland’s MPs in signing a pledge to support a National Strategy for the Prevention of Young Sudden Cardiac Death which it is hoped will help to save lives.

It follows a campaign by Scottish teenager Abby Lang seeking support from parliamentarians on behalf of UK charity Cardiac Risk in the Young (CRY). The group campaigns on behalf of young people diagnosed with cardiac conditions and offers bereavement support to affected families.

Martin Docherty-Hughes MP said:

“Every week in the UK at least 12 young people under the age of 35 die unexpectedly due to undiagnosed heart conditions. This is a tragic and sobering statistic that is likely to actually underestimate the number of families who have lost loved ones too soon as a result of sudden cardiac death.

“Despite still being at school Abby Lang has worked tirelessly to raise awareness of this condition and is a great example of how young people in Scotland can get involved in worthwhile campaigns and make a difference.

“It’s clear the UK needs a national strategy to reduce the number of young people losing their lives unnecessary due to sudden cardiac death. I was pleased to join my colleagues at Westminster in supporting this important campaign to help save young lives.

“I would encourage anyone in West Dunbartonshire seeking further support or information on the condition to get in touch with the charity Cardiac Risk in the Young (CRY).”
