Local SNP MP Martin Docherty-Hughes has given his backing to women from across Clydebank, Dumbarton and the Vale of Leven who are pressing for the UK government to rethink changes to state pension entitlement.

MP for West Dunbartonshire Martin Docherty-Hughes joined local campaigners as hundreds of people from across Scotland marched in Glasgow in support of the WASPI (Women Against State Pension Inequality) campaign.

The WASPI movement is pushing for fair transitional state pension arrangements for all women who have been affected by changes to state pension legislation.

Across the UK millions of 1950s-born women have had their state pension qualifying age changed by up to six years and face being up to £48,000 out of pocket.

Martin Docherty-Hughes MP said:

“It’s a privilege to stand side-by-side with West Dunbartonshire’s WASPI campaigners who are working tirelessly to end the injustice for 1950s-born women facing state pension inequality.

“Over 350,000 women in West Dunbartonshire and across Scotland are being robbed of their pensions by the UK government – pensions that they have worked hard for all of their lives.

“The huge turnout at the weekend’s rally demonstrates the strength of the campaign. If the Tories think the WASPI campaign is going away anytime soon they can think again. We’re not giving up.

“These women are simply asking the UK government to pay out what they have paid in. It’s time for the Tories to do the right thing and bring forward a fair deal that pays the pensions my constituents deserve.”
