CONCERNS RAISED OVER CLOSURE OF VIRGIN MONEY OFFICES IN CLYDEBANK

Concerns have been raised over the proposed closure by Virgin Money Group of its offices in Clydebank.

The site at Clydebank Business Park has historically operated as a customer service and support hub under the Clydesdale Bank name, but has recently been rebranded to Virgin Money.

Locally based staff have been informed that they are being relocated to a new head office in Glasgow City Centre.

MP for West Dunbartonshire Martin Docherty-Hughes has hit out at the plans, calling it ‘unconscionable’ for a big high street bank to remove jobs from a deprived area amidst a cost-of-living crisis.

Last year, the UK banking operations of Virgin Money Group reported pre-tax profits of £595m, up from £417m in 2021.

Local MP Martin Docherty-Hughes has demanded an urgent meeting with the bank’s senior management alongside the area’s MSP Marie McNair.

It is understood that the Virgin Money bank branch in Clyde Shopping Centre is unaffected by the plans.

Commenting, Martin Docherty-Hughes MP said:

“It’s deeply disappointing that Virgin Money Group is proposing to close its Clydebank offices and relocate these jobs away from West Dunbartonshire.

“This is a big UK company that last year boasted of making profits in the hundreds of millions. Taking vital jobs away from a deprived area amidst a cost-of-living crisis is unconscionable.

“Whilst I’ve been given assurances there will be no redundancies, clearly Virgin’s decision to disinvest from West Dunbartonshire will have a detrimental impact locally.

“I and Marie McNair MSP have requested a meeting with the company’s senior management and will be urging them to reconsider.”
