WEST DUNBARTONSHIRE HOUSEHOLDS HAMMERED BY INTEREST RATES RISES

West Dunbartonshire’s MP Martin Docherty-Hughes says local families are paying a heavy price for Westminster’s failure – as interest rates rise to their highest level in 15 years.

Following the Bank of England’s decision to hike interest rates to 4.5%, the UK government has been slammed by the SNP for failing to tackle the rising costs of living.

With inflation (CPI) at 10.1%, food and non-alcoholic drink inflation at 19.1%, and interest rates rising for the 12th time in a row – charities are warning that households facing soaring costs for food, rent and mortgage payments are struggling to make ends meet.

Local MP Martin Docherty-Hughes is working closely with advice charities and organisations in West Dunbartonshire to help hard-pressed families.

The SNP has repeated calls for the UK government to deliver additional support to prevent households falling into arrears.

Martin Docherty-Hughes MP said:

“The Westminster government has trashed the economy and families here are being forced to pay a heavy price.

“Homeowners and renters across West Dunbartonshire are being hammered by rising food prices and the Bank of England’s rate increases. As costs soar, the situation is becoming more desperate for families struggling to make ends meet.

“I work closely with local advice charities and food banks – for anyone falling into arrears it’s important to reach out as early as possible.

“The UK government needs to get a grip and deliver the urgent action required to support families and prevent people losing their homes.”
