Local MP Martin Docherty-Hughes has praised the work of Clydebank-based Carers of West Dunbartonshire in championing the rights of unpaid carers.

SNP MP Docherty-Hughes, a former young carer, paid a visit to the local carers centre in West Dunbartonshire as part of Carers Week 2023.

Carers Week is an annual event which recognises the vital contribution made by people caring unpaid for family members or friends who have a disability, illness, mental health condition, or who need extra help as they grow older.

There are an estimated 800,000 unpaid carers across Scotland, but only a small proportion of that number access the support they’re entitled to.

The area’s MP Martin pledged to continue working to improve outcomes for caregivers across Clydebank, Dumbarton and the Vale of Leven.

Martin Docherty-Hughes MP said:

“As a former young carer, I know first-hand the challenges facing many unpaid carers in West Dunbartonshire and across the country.

“Carers make a huge contribution to our communities, but too many miss out on support because their carer roles aren’t recognised quickly enough.

“We’re fortunate to have local groups like the Carers of West Dunbartonshire, who work tirelessly to champion the rights of carers across Clydebank, Dumbarton and the Vale.

“Carers Week is important in paying tribute to the contribution of caregivers and knowing where they can turn to for support.

“I’m determined to continue working locally and in parliament to ensure carers are properly recognised and supported all year round.”

Further information on support available through the Carers of West Dunbartonshire is available at: www.carerswd.org or by calling the carers centre on 0141 941 1550.
