Martin Docherty-Hughes, MP for West Dunbartonshire, has lodged a motion in parliament congratulating Dumbarton District Women’s Aid on its 30th anniversary.

The local women’s aid charity has been praised in the House of Commons for the invaluable support and refuge services it has given to victims of domestic abuse over the past 30 years.

Mr Docherty-Hughes was invited to meet with local staff, volunteers and supporters of Dumbarton District Women’s Aid last month during a special event in Dumbarton marking the charity’s 30th anniversary.

Dumbarton District Women’s Aid also celebrated being awarded three years of funding from the Scottish Government for its dedicated young people and families team – an initiative which provides emotional and practical support to children affected by violence and domestic abuse.

Martin Docherty-Hughes MP said:

“Over the past 30 years Dumbarton District Women’s Aid (DDWA) has provided dedicated and invaluable support for women, children and young people affected by domestic abuse from West Dunbartonshire and beyond.

“I was delighted to have the opportunity to pay tribute to the many staff, volunteers and supporters at DDWA who work tirelessly to help women and families that have been left devastated by domestic violence. And importantly also those families who have survived domestic abuse and inspire other women to come forward and seek help.

“The Scottish Government is investing record levels of funding to tackle violence against women and girls, and I congratulate Dumbarton District Women’s Aid for securing over £250,000 from the fund for its dedicated young people and families team.

“Domestic abuse can happen to anyone at any time; destroying the lives of too many women, families and children. But it’s important to know that advice and support is available for those affected, with women’s aid charities such as DDWA on hand to offer safe refuge and support for anyone who needs it.”
