The result of the EU referendum is understandably a cause of concern and anxiety for over 150,000 EU citizens who have made Scotland their home and legitimately live and work here. This is why I, and other SNP colleagues, have written to EU citizens who have chosen to make their home in my constituency to assure them that they are welcome here. I was heartened to see that Police Scotland did not report a rise in hate crimes following the referendum, unlike the situation in England, however I am conscious that not all hate crime is reported.
You also make mention of the upcoming international summits on refugees and migration. My SNP colleagues and I have been at the forefront of standing up for the rights of refugees – in our first opportunity to bring a debate to the House of Commons after last year’s election, we called for greater support for refugees and spoke up for their moral and legal right to be treated properly.
