Martin Docherty-Hughes MP has paid a visit to Antonine Sports Centre in Duntocher to meet with staff and aspiring athletes to hear about the opportunities the centre offers for sport, leisure and recreation in the local community.

The Antonine Sports Centre was first opened in 1980 and over the years it has developed to offer a range of sporting opportunities for people of all ages from Duntocher, Clydebank and beyond.

Following the success of Scotland’s athletes at the 2016 Olympic Games in Rio, Martin Docherty-Hughes was invited by the Trustees of the Antonine to try out some of the sports facilities available at the centre.

Martin Docherty-Hughes MP said:

“The Antonine has proudly served the community of Duntocher for over 30 years and I was delighted to have the opportunity to visit the centre and try out some of the many sporting activities available here.

“We know how important sport and exercise is to both our physical and mental health. The Scottish Government and West Dunbartonshire Council are working to encourage people of all ages to become more physically active and local sports centres such as the Antonine play a vital role in getting more people into sport.

“The Olympics in Rio was the most successful overseas games ever for Scottish athletes with 13 medals. If, like me, you’ve been inspired by the performances of our athletes then I would encourage you to get active and try out one of the many sporting activities available at the Antonine and other sports clubs across West Dunbartonshire.”

Kevin Carlin, Centre Manager for the Antonine, said:

“I’d like to thank Martin for taking the time to visit us here at the Antonine and see first-hand what we’re doing to get people of all ages from Duntocher and across Clydebank involved in sport.

“The Antonine is a not for profit, charitable organisation which has been serving the community of Duntocher since the 1980s. We now offer a range of facilities at the centre including football, Mixed Martial Arts (MMA), tennis, fitness classes, weight training, badminton and much more.

“We welcome people of all ages and abilities at the Antonine so if you want to get involved please feel free to drop in to the centre or call us on 01389 878972 for more information.”
