Martin has been working with the Post Office to protect services for local residents in West Dunbartonshire.

Local MP Martin Docherty-Hughes has welcomed the commencement of a new Mobile Post Office service for Old Kilpatrick.

A new mobile facility postal van is being operated by the Postmaster for Johnstone, which will serve 13 locations across the West of Scotland including the village of Old Kilpatrick.

Old Kilpatrick has been without a Post Office service since its withdrawal from the Nisa Local store on Dumbarton Road in July 2020.

The new Mobile Post Office will be located outside the Keystore on Dumbarton Road, Old Kilpatrick, G60 5JH, every Friday from 9am-10am.

A range of Post Office services will be available via the mobile facility, including cash withdrawals and deposits, mail and parcels, bills payments, and vehicle licences.

Martin Docherty-Hughes MP said:

“Post Offices are vital to local communities and the loss of the service in Old Kilpatrick has been a real blow to residents.

“The arrival of a new Mobile Post Office service in the village is very welcome. It will be of particular benefit for older residents and those unable to travel to the next nearest branches in Dalmuir and Duntocher.

“Whilst I would urge people to make use of the Mobile Post Office van as much as possible, it’s certainly no substitute for a full-time permanent Post Office serving Old Kilpatrick and the wider area.

“With responsibility for the Post Office network resting with Westminster, it’s disappointing that subsequent UK governments have chosen to cut subsidies and run down this vital public service – resulting in branch closures across the country.

“I’ve worked with the Post Office on a number of campaigns to protect community access to cash and restore local postal services across West Dunbartonshire. I will continue pressing to ensure everything possible is being done to bring a permanent Post Office service back to Old Kilpatrick.

“That’s likely to be challenging until the UK government delivers the investment needed, but I have been assured by the Post Office that the new mobile service will be in place in Old Kilpatrick for as long as it’s needed.”
