West Dunbartonshire’s MP Martin Docherty-Hughes has reiterated his call for Boris Johnson to resign, following publication of a damning report into the extent of illegal partying at Downing Street during the height of lockdown.

The report, led by senior civil servant Sue Gray, investigated 16 separate alleged gatherings on Government premises during COVID-19 restrictions – concluding that events were attended by government leaders and “should not have been allowed to happen”.

The 16 events in question took place across 12 different dates between May 2020 and April 2021 in locations including 10 Downing Street and the Cabinet Office.

Of those, 12 were investigated by the Metropolitan Police, who issued 126 fines to 83 people, including to Mr Johnson and his wife, and Mr Sunak

In her conclusions, the report by Sue Gray states there had been “failures of leadership and judgment” across both Number 10 and the Cabinet Office, and that senior leadership must bear responsibility for the culture of rule-breaking at Downing Street.

Commenting, Martin Docherty-Hughes MP said:

“The Sue Gray report into law-breaking at No. 10 during lockdown is utterly damning of Boris Johnson and the callousness of this Westminster government.

“At the height of the pandemic, while the Prime Minister was raising toasts at boozy parties in Downing Street, my constituents in West Dunbartonshire were making unimaginable sacrifices to keep our communities safe. No insincere apology from Boris Johnson can make up for the disregard they have shown to the families who lost loved ones to Covid.

“This Tory Prime Minister broke the law, misled the House of Commons, and lied to the public. He should do the decent thing for once and resign.”
