Martin Docherty-Hughes, MP for West Dunbartonshire, has welcomed the SNP Scottish Government’s Programme for Government – describing it as a bold, ambitious and progressive plan for Scotland’s future.

The legislative agenda unveiled by the First Minister details 16 new Bills and includes actions to tackle poverty, transform education and develop the industries of the future.

Key announcements include:

  • A pledge to lift the public sector pay cap for NHS and other public sector workers.
  • Extending free personal care to all those under 65 who need it, known as ‘Frank’s Law’.
  • Rolling out new social security powers as part of a package of measures to tackle inequality, child poverty, end rough sleeping and reduce drug deaths.
  • Support for key business sectors including low carbon, screen, manufacturing and financial technology.
  • Research into a citizens’ basic income scheme to explore innovative ways of supporting people in need.

Martin Docherty-Hughes MP said:

“The SNP Scottish Government has set out a bold Programme for Government which outlines a range of ambitious and progressive measures to create a better future for Scotland.

“I particularly welcome the First Minister’s plans to build a modern, successful and dynamic economy by ensuring we’re equipped with the skills and expertise to embrace technological change. We must aspire to once again lead the world in innovation and develop the industries of the future that will create jobs and protect employment.

“The SNP’s commitment to lift the public sector cap is great news for NHS and public sector workers across Scotland – recognising the invaluable contribution they make to our society. I’m also pleased by plans to introduce ‘Frank’s Law’ which extends free personal care to those under 65 with degenerative conditions such as dementia – offering dignity to people affected by life-limiting conditions.

“At a time of austerity implemented by the Tory UK Government, the SNP is taking a range of bold actions to tackle poverty and support some of the most vulnerable and disadvantaged people in our communities.

“We will see significant investment in measures to end the scourge of child poverty and prioritise efforts to tackle homelessness and end rough sleeping. The exploration of a citizens’ basic income and implementation of a social security system based on dignity and respect are also positive steps towards building a fairer society.

“This is a Programme for Government that builds on the SNP’s successes over the past ten years and offers an ambitious vision for Scotland’s future.”
