I consider it a tremendous privilege to represent the people of West Dunbartonshire in the House of Commons. But it’s fair to say that these past weeks on the green benches have been pantomime-esque as the UK government descends into chaos over its Brexit plans.

The recent theatrics in the UK parliament have left a lot to be desired, especially with so much at stake over the jobs and livelihoods of our constituents.

Westminster has long been thought of as a place detached from the real world, which is why I prefer to spend as much time as I can working in my constituency – holding surgeries, visiting local groups and meeting with small businesses.

I never fail to be impressed by the generosity and spirit on show in our communities at this time of year. All across Clydebank, Dumbarton and the Vale of Leven there are kind-hearted people giving up their time to help those in need, making a positive contribution to our communities.

At local school fares pupils have been raising money for a variety of good causes. Volunteers at Food4Thought and WD Community Foodshare have been taking in record donations of toys, food and essential items for Christmas appeals. And many individuals, local groups and businesses have all been playing their part in ensuring families in hardship don’t have to do without.

It’s what the season of goodwill is all about. I’d like to wish a very Merry Christmas and guid New Year to my constituents across West Dunbartonshire.
